SACRAMENTO, May 28, 2006 -- A recently released preliminary investigation
by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) failed to find any
direct connection between Bausch & Lomb's ReNu with MoistureLoc
contact lens solution and the recent outbreak of Fusarium
Kerititis, a fungus infection that can cause permanent vision loss
if left untreated.
The FDA stressed that although relatively minor inconsistencies
with approved manufacturing requirements were identified, analysis
of raw materials and the manufacturing plant in Greenville SC where
the suspect contact lens solution was manufactured and packaged
found nothing to tie ReNu with MoistureLoc to the fungus.
The report is preliminary and the FDA expects to have a more
expansive analysis available soon.
