A "Pioneer" in Lasik Refractive
Surgery
There is no specific
medical definition of a "pioneer in refractive surgery" and the
term can be intentionally or unintentionally misleading.
The first doctor to develop a technique or device, the first
doctor to perform a new surgery in the US, the first doctor to perform
a new technique in the state, the first doctor to perform a new
technique in a particular hospital could be all legitimately be
considered "pioneers".
A very good way to determine the value of any pioneering claim
is to ask the doctor if s/he holds a patent for the device or participated
in any of the device's FDA studies or clinical trials. If the claim
is not for a device, ask if the doctor teaches the skill to other
doctors.
Ultimately, more interest should be given to determine if the
doctor is one of the best, rather than one of the first.
